Dipropylene Glycol (DPG), identified by CAS number 25265-71-8, is a high-purity, colorless, and practically odorless liquid with a high boiling point and low volatility. Chemically, DPG is a mixture of three isomeric structural compounds: 4-oxa-2,6-heptanediol, 2-(2-hydroxypropoxy)propan-1-ol, and 2-(2-hydroxypropyl)oxypropan-1-ol. It is produced as a co-product during the pressurized hydrolysis of propylene oxide, alongside monopropylene glycol (MPG) and tripropylene glycol (TPG).
DPG is characterized by its bifunctional nature as an alcohol, offering excellent solvency for both water-soluble and oil-soluble substances. Due to its low toxicity and exceptional stability, it serves as a critical component in sensitive industries. It is primarily available in two grades: Fragrance Grade, which undergoes additional purification to ensure minimal odor interference, and Industrial Grade. As a versatile intermediate and solvent, DPG bridges the gap between aqueous and organic phases, making it indispensable in formulations ranging from high-end perfumes to heavy-duty industrial resins.
