Ethylene Carbonate (EC) is a cyclic carbonate ester with the chemical formula C3H4O3. It is a critical industrial chemical that appears as a colorless to yellowish crystalline solid at room temperature, transitioning into a transparent, low-viscosity liquid above its melting point of approximately 36° C. Historically valued for its high polarity and chemical stability, EC has gained global prominence as a primary component in the electrolyte formulations of lithium-ion batteries. Its unique ability to facilitate the formation of a stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on graphite anodes is indispensable for modern energy storage. Beyond electrochemistry, EC serves as a high-boiling, low-toxicity solvent and a versatile intermediate in organic synthesis. It is increasingly favored in “green chemistry” initiatives due to its biodegradability and low odor profile, replacing more hazardous solvents in polymer processing, surface coatings, and the production of specialized chemical derivatives.
