Methyl Acetate (MTAC)
Acetates & Esters

Methyl Acetate (MTAC)

Methyl Acetate (MTAC), also known as acetic acid methyl ester, is a clear, colorless, and highly volatile liquid carboxylate ester with the chemical formula $CH_3COOCH_3$. Characterized by its pleasant, fruity odor reminiscent of nail polish remover, MTAC is a versatile solvent widely utilized across various industrial sectors. It is primarily produced via the carbonylation of methanol as a byproduct of acetic acid production or through the direct esterification of acetic acid with methanol.

From a regulatory and environmental standpoint, Methyl Acetate is highly significant because it is classified as a VOC-exempt solvent by the US EPA. This makes it an ideal “green” alternative to more hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) or regulated volatile organic compounds like MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) and Acetone. While it shares similar solvency power and evaporation rates with acetone, MTAC is less hydrophilic and offers better moisture resistance. Its high solvency for resins, polymers, and oils, combined with its rapid evaporation profile, makes it a critical component in modern high-performance formulations.
