Mono Propylene Glycol (MPG)

Mono Propylene Glycol (MPG), scientifically identified as 1,2-propanediol, is a clear, colorless, and viscous liquid with a faint, sweet odor and taste. It is a synthetic organic compound with the chemical formula $C_3H_8O_2$. As a dihydric alcohol (diol), it is characterized by its high degree of hygroscopicity and its ability to miscible completely with water, Alcohol, and various organic solvents. MPG is predominantly produced through the hydration of propylene oxide.

It is a versatile chemical available in two primary grades: USP/EP (Pharmacopoeia grade) and Industrial Grade. The USP grade is categorized as “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) by the FDA, making it essential for human consumption and topical applications. Unlike its counterpart, ethylene glycol, MPG possesses a very low toxicity profile and is readily biodegradable, making it the preferred choice in sensitive environments. Its multi-functional nature allows it to serve as a solvent, humectant, preservative, and heat transfer fluid across diverse global industries.
