High-Purity Solvents, Water Treatments

Tolyltriazole (TTA)

Tolyltriazole (TTA), identified by CAS number 29385-43-1, is a high-efficiency aromatic corrosion inhibitor specifically formulated for the protection of copper and copper-based alloys. Chemically, it is a mixture consisting primarily of 4-methylbenzotriazole and 5-methylbenzotriazole. TTA functions through a chemisorption mechanism, where the lone-pair electrons from the triazole nitrogen atoms form coordination bonds with metal surface ions. This process creates a thin, tenacious, and insoluble monomolecular protective film that acts as a physical barrier against corrosive agents such as dissolved oxygen, chlorides, and sulfides.

Renowned for its thermal and chemical stability, TTA remains effective across a broad range of temperatures and pH levels. It is a critical component in industrial water treatment, automotive chemistry, and metal finishing. Beyond its primary role in yellow metal protection, TTA demonstrates excellent compatibility with other treatment chemicals, often exhibiting synergistic effects that enhance the overall performance of multi-metal corrosion inhibition programs.

Attributes

Key Features and Benefits

  • Superior Yellow Metal Inhibition: Forms a robust protective layer on copper, brass, and bronze, significantly reducing corrosion rates.
  • Low Treat Rates: Provides effective protection at very low concentrations (typically 1–10 ppm), making it a cost-effective solution for large-scale systems.
  • Oxidative Stability: Exhibits high resistance to degradation in the presence of oxidizing biocides like chlorine and bromine.
  • Thermal Resilience: Maintains its inhibitory properties in high-temperature heat exchange environments without decomposing.
  • Synergistic Capabilities: Enhances the performance of steel inhibitors (like phosphonates) and scale inhibitors in complex water treatment formulations.
  • Ease of Application: Available in various physical forms (granules, flakes, or liquid salts) to suit different manufacturing and dosing requirements.
